How to Manage Pathology Specimens 

 

  • Pathology specimens ordered through Order Management are set up to generate lab specimen labels. The orderable “lab pathology specimen” contains queries for required informa on needed. The actual pathology order is a ached as a reflex order that goes to the Pathology External Orders queue. 

 

  • RECEIVE: In LAB, receive the “lab pathology specimen” through the “receive specimen” rou ne. Once the lab specimen is received, the specimen’s test results that pull forward the required pathology queries and will verify immediately. 

 

  • There is one test, Pathology Surgical Specimen (PSURG.A), that does not auto result un l 96 hours a er receipt.  PSURG.A is set up for a delayed auto result so that collec ng sites can put their “lab pathology specimens” onto site batches for the pathology performing site. 

 

  • SITE BATCH: If you are a collec ng site, go to the site batch rou ne to create a site batch of collected pathology specimens and send to the pathology performing site. The site batch report will look like this one: 

 

 

 

PATHOLOGY SPECIMENS Desktop: Monitoring Ordered/Received “Lab Pathology Specimens” 

 

 

  • Desktops  Specimen  Worklist  Pathology Specimens 

 

  • Ordered or received “LAB Pathology Specimens” for your lab site will display under the “Pathology Specimens” desktop link. 

 

 

 

 

  • Specimens ordered for your facility display as shown below. EXAMPLE: One specimen has been received/auto resulted and one specimen is in an ORD status. 

 

  • Click on the “Refresh” button to refresh your desktop. This desktop does not auto refresh. 

 

  • At 96 hours a er receipt, the test, PSURG.A, auto-verifies. The completed specimen will fall off your desktop when your desktop is refreshed. PATHOLOGY PERFORMING SITES 

PTH EXTERNAL ORDERS QUEUE – Creating PTH Requisitions 

 

  • Desktops    PTH Pathology    External Orders 

 

 

  • PTH External Order queue displays as shown: 

 

 

 

 

  • Select “Go to Account” button to find the correct patient. 

 

 

  • Enter patient’s account number. 

 

 

 

 

  • You will be taken directly to the line containing the patient’s order. 
  •  

 

  • Select “Create Requisition” button. 

 

 

 

 

  • “Create Requisition” takes you directly to the PTH requisition. It auto-populates the following fields from the PTH order: Spec Type, Spec Date, Spec Time (this defaults to me order is placed in OM/Order Management). 

 

 

 

 

  • Enter through the requisition to auto-fill department and specimen number (next). Enter “Assign to” information if used by your site. Enter appropriate issues with descriptions if applicable. 

 

 

  • NOTE: Default procedures for the specimen type automatically are ordered when the specimen is created.

 

 

  • Click “Save” to create specimen number. You will be taken to the “Enter/Edit Req Data Sections”. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • Click on the “QSURG” data sec on to pull through the query information that was collected in the “LAB pathology specimen” order. Click in the QSURG Queries popup to save the data sec on information. 

 

 

 

  • Click “Close” at the bottom of the page to file the completed requisition. 

 

 

 

  • When you click on the close message, it takes you back to the “External Orders” queue.
